Landis does the impossible

For the majority of you out there that think the Tour de France sounds like a good vacation idea, you're missing some incredibly compelling sports drama in this year's race. After losing 8 minutes to his rivals on Stage 16, Floyd Landis climbed back within 30 seconds of the lead on the next stage, perhaps the most punishing mountain stage of the entire tour. To compare, this is like being down by 50 at half time in the Super Bowl, and tying it in the 3rd quarter. It just doesn't happen. Except it did. This is one hell of a race - Go Floyd!

Amusing note: velonews has a funny article up about how it must be the beer Floyd drank after stage 16 that propelled him to superhuman feats. The identity of the beer is still unknown...

Apparently it really was impossible. As those of you who watch Sportscenter with any frequency doubtless know by now, Landis has tested positive for an artificially high ratio of testosterone after Stage 17. While the duplicate sample has yet to be analyzed, the suspicion alone will be enough to put an * next to his win and probably force him into retirement. Besides, his denials haven't exactly been strident. His first response wasn't "I didn't cheat", but rather "I don't know why I tested positive." That's a big difference, in my view.
